What it States
This theory attempts to answer the greatest question of all, where did we come from? The big bang theory states that prior to the event occuring, there was nothing, during and after, there was something: our universe. According to the theory, approximately 14 billion years ago our universe began as a singularity. A singularity is thought to be a zone of finite matter that is squished into infinite density. They are also thought to exist at the core of black holes. This singularity, rather than exploding, expanded and continues to expand today. We and all else that exist are actually inside this singularity, that has expanded.
Who Proposed it
The Big Bang Theory was first proposed by Georges Lemaître, with the term "Big Bang Theory" being first used by Sir Fred Hoyle.
Who Supports It
Most astrophycists support the theory because of the reason displayed below. It is commonly thought by most people that it was the event starting the universe.
Proof
Two of the reasons the theory is greatly supported are Red Shift and Cosmic Background micro Radiation.
Red Shift:
Red Shift is the shift in the frequency of a photon to a lower wave length. When an object is moving towards you, the light from this object is shifted to a higher wave length, making blue light on the light spectrum. When an object is moving away, the light is shifted to longer wave lengths, therefore shifting to red light. Light from distant galaxies is shifted to the longer and redder wave lengths, meaning that they are moving away from us. As the big bang theory states that the universe originally expanded and should still be expanding, Red Shift crucially shows that the universe is expanding.
Cosmic Background Radiation
Cosmic Background Radiaton (CBR) is the faint afterglow from the creation of the universe. Several hundred thousand years after the big bang, as the universe was expanding, there was a point when radiation (photons) detached from matter. This radiation has now cooled to 2.7 Kelvin. Because the spectrum of CBR is almost exactly the same as a 'black body' (an object that absorbs all incident electromagnetic radiation, a perfect radiator) it indicates that this CBR could not have been caused by any common means.
Other Reasons
Another piece of evidence that supports the theory is the abundance of elements in the universe. The theory states the certain amounts of elements must be made, and the amounts observed match almost perfectly the amount predicted.
The other main piece of evidence is that the Big Bang Theory is the only one that has a framework for the eventual evolution for the universe as we know it today.
